Along the street I walk alone

My mom and I got crafty last night and created some fairies from silk flowers and pipe cleaners. Then we got fancy with the glue gun and added wings and beads. It was really easy to make these and a lot of fun too.

This Gnome took the longest to do since I cut out clothes instead of using a flower as a dress. I love how they turned out!

My 2007 Fairy Garden at it's flowery peak. More flowers like my Columbines, Day Lillies and Shasta Daisy bloomed later on in the summer. Although being almost September I did not get to see my three Foxgloves bloom. Last year they were brilliant and stood three feet tall! But nothing this year sadly. We had many weeks of rain and cold temperatures so that could have contributed to them not sprouting up in August like they did last year.

This photo is the best my garden looked all summer. The irises in the middle dried up shortly after this was taken and the center of the garden has a nice brown ring instead of colour like it does here. I should really plant something that lasts longer there. I'll plan it out for next year!

Autumn is upon us and it's actually my favorite time of year. Unfortunately it's a step closer to winter but that doesn't bother me. I just love the colour of the the forest and the smell of dried leaves. Also that crunching sound whenever you step under a tree. I just love it! Also makes for some great portraits on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Holey stones are centuries old stones carved by nature that have holes that go completely through the stone. These stones are reputed to have extremely powerful magical properties, the most important of which is protection. They are old stones that carry the wisdom of the ages, and of nature.

In Italian Witchcraft the holed stone is associated with fairies, and often referred as the holy stone. It is considered a doorway, or key to the doorway, into the fairy kingdom. In Italian folk magic, it is believed these stones have the power to bind a fairy to one's service for a length of time.

Holey stones are also considered to bestow the gift of pyschic sight when looked through. It is said that if you look through a holey stone during the light of a full stone that you can see faeries, visions, ghosts, non-physical entities, and even ‘heaven' or the other-world.

Holey stones have earned a variety of names, men-an-tol, an-cloc cosanta (drilled stones), crick stones (modern name), fairy stones, luck stones, and even Odin stones deriving from a legend that says Odin transformed himself into a worm and slipped through a hole in a rock.

Holey stones are very rare and one may go a lifetime without ever finding a natural one.

Lucky me! I found this one on Sunset Beach, Hecla Island, Manitoba, Canada.

Pots and pans shimmer and gleam
Sparkling glasses shine so bright
Out from the cupbord a fairy takes flight

A cup of flour a pinch of salt
A sprinkle of sugar a splash of malt
Into the bowl the mix goes around
Tiny hands work not making a sound

Into the oven a while to bake
Watch it carefully for goodness sake
The spoons are cleaned and counters washed
The oven wiped down with the kitchen cloth

Open the door and onto the tray
Icing and sprinkles are soon on their way
Goodies and treats created with care
Left on the table for the family to share

Back to the cupbord to rest for the day
A tuckered out fairy I really must say
She loves to help out, clean and be merry

My garden statues of Gnomes and Fairies have all been placed in their original positions. All my perennials have survived the winter because they all have sprouted up! My official Fairy Garden sign is hung up and I planted a few bedding plants. Spring is in full swing and the garden is taking off! New addition for the year is the solar butterfly lights in the shrub on the right. I will be purchasing another for the left shrub. They look amazing at night. Just a slow flickr that makes the garden come alive! I love it! I'll keep you posted on new developments.

Sarah's Fairy Garden 2007 is already starting to transform. I have spent a few hours this past weekend pulling out dead stuff, raking leaves and picking already growing weeds out of the soil. It's starting to grow and it looks like pretty much all of my perennials have made it through the winter. The iris bulbs are sprouting up and there are even earth worms mulling about. It's spring and I'm so happy it's finally here! More fairy garden progress to come later.

Counting its tail, a large Long-tailed Weasel male, the largest of the three species in Canada, stretches nearly half a metre (20 in) in length, yet can slip into a hole just 3 cm (1.25 in) across. This enables it to enter small rodent tunnels used by mice and voles. In summer, it enters ground squirrels burrows in search of its favourite food. Average males measure 406 mm (16 in), their tail is 135 mm (5.25) long and they weigh 225 g (12.6 oz). Males are approximately 25 per cent larger than females, which on average weigh only 102 g (5.7 oz).

When winter approaches, within 30 days it grows a coat of white, giving it perfect camouflage against the snow -- all except for the tip of its tail, which stays black. A hungry predator, such as a hawk or owl, aims for that black tip, enabling the weasel to escape. Towards spring, between late February and April, in only 25 days, it reverses the process, acquiring the cinnamon-brown topcoat it will use all summer. This includes brown feet, unlike the other two species which retain white feet. The underside is usually buff-coloured." (Taken from the weaselhead.org website).
